Eye of the Sahara

If you fly over the vast golden expanse of the Sahara Desert in Mauritania, a strange, circular structure appears—so perfectly shaped and enormous that it’s visible from space. Known as the Richat Structure, this geologic formation has earned the nickname “The Eye of the Sahara”.

From above, it resembles a massive bull’s-eye or fossilized whirlpool—about 40 kilometers (25 miles) across—etched into the desert’s surface. Its layered rings of brown, beige, and ochre look like an abstract painting sprawled across the sand.


Discovery and First Impressions

The Richat Structure was first spotted in the early days of space exploration. Astronauts aboard the Gemini 4 mission in 1965 photographed it, surprised by the symmetry and clarity of its form. Initially, scientists speculated it might be the scar of a giant meteorite impact—after all, large craters often display circular outlines.

But further investigation told a different story.


Not a Crater, but a Geologic Wonder

Geologists now believe the Eye is a domed geological uplift, created by natural forces deep within Earth’s crust. Over millions of years, erosion stripped away the upper layers of rock, revealing the resistant strata in concentric circles. The process left behind a raised, circular ridge pattern with a mix of sandstone, volcanic rock, and other sedimentary layers.

In scientific terms, it’s called a symmetrical anticline—a rock formation that once bulged upward, then weathered down into the striking rings we see today.


Why It’s Perfectly Round

The Eye’s near-perfect symmetry is part of its mystery and allure. The rock layers eroded evenly because of the dome’s balanced uplift, exposing alternating hard and soft layers in a circular pattern. Softer rock wore away faster, forming the lower “valleys” between ridges, while harder rock resisted erosion, forming the raised rings.

Its center contains ancient quartzite, some dating back nearly 600 million years, making it a geologic time capsule of Earth’s early history.


Cultural and Historical Significance

Although largely remote and uninhabited today, the region around the Eye has traces of ancient life—stone tools and artifacts that hint at prehistoric human activity when the Sahara was greener. Some fringe theories have even linked the Richat Structure to the fabled city of Atlantis, due to its size, shape, and proximity to ancient coastlines—but these ideas remain speculative and outside mainstream science.


Visiting the Eye of the Sahara

Reaching the Eye is challenging. It lies near the small town of Ouadane in Mauritania, far from major tourist routes. Those who venture there are rewarded with surreal, ground-level views of vast ridges and rocky slopes stretching toward the horizon—though the full beauty of the Eye is best appreciated from the air.


Why It Continues to Fascinate

The Richat Structure isn’t just a geologic oddity—it’s a reminder that Earth itself is a master sculptor. Through uplift, erosion, and time, it created a formation so vast and precise that it could be mistaken for the work of intelligent design. Whether seen as a natural wonder, a navigational landmark for astronauts, or the subject of adventurous theories, the Eye of the Sahara remains one of the most intriguing features on our planet.
